this is not a quilt

Yet in many ways it is. This is a layout of the pages of the Parallel Lives book Jean and I are creating. We're like a dog with a bone on this thing. Collaboration brings insight, modifications, and sometimes even doubt. Happily, we have arrived at a solution that pleases us both. More to follow.

a new companion

Jean surprised me with this wonderful new sculpture last week in honor of our collaborative work Parallel Lives. Shiny Thing is a perfect execution of something she and I talk about all the time -- our tendency as artists and designers to be attracted to the next shiny thing, just like crows who feather their rookeries with tidbits and tinsel. She admitted that the working title was Krovarik. And just take a look at those gorgeous feet! Gotta love em.

study for new piece

Here is a study for a new piece I want to do. Working title, Look Within. I used an old linen napkin for the test. I like the extra slubs and texture it adds. Maybe I need to go looking for some more tablecloths.

I'm in!

Just got notification that my quilt, AHA! Moments, will be part of the Quilts=Art=Quilts show at the Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn, NY from October 29 - January 8. This gallery is a beautiful venue for fiber art. I encourage anyone in the area to attend.

Here is a detail shot of the piece:

AHA! moments, Paula Kovarik, © 2010It was inspired by a doodle I did in 2008. I sent the doodle, (enlarged to 54" across) to Spoonflower. They printed it to a white cotton duck on which I added hundreds of little nodes in thread, connecting the dots and adding texture.

details details

My friend and collaborator, Jean, has taken some exquisite shots of the leftover body parts we had for our Parallel Lives show. I think they deserve a show of their own. Here is one of the pod people I worked on. You can see the doodling on the fabric, the threads and even the sparkly stuffing. Don't you just want to know what would be birthed from that inner space? You'll see more in the future when we publish the book about the work. Coming soon.....
